Step Towards Employment Program (STEP) – Helping Albertans in Whitecourt, Athabasca, Westlock, Barrhead, and surrounding areas find meaningful work. Through personalized career planning, job placement and workforce development, training workshops, and ongoing support, STEP empowers unemployed and underemployed individuals to overcome barriers and build successful, long-term careers.

STEP helps Albertans in Whitecourt, Westlock, Barrhead, Athabasca, and surrounding areas prepare for, secure, and maintain meaningful employment through FREE, personalized career and job placement or workforce development services.

Services Include:

  • Career and Employment Information Services (job boards, resume help, workshops, resources)
  • One-on-one coaching and pre-employment supports (life skills, interview preparation, labour market awareness)
  • Job placement, job coaching, and retention support
  • Short-term training (First Aid, WHMIS, Food Safe, etc.)
  • Financial supports for work readiness (work boots, PPE, transportation)
  • Referrals to community services and ongoing follow-up

Eligibility:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Live in the service area (Athabasca, Westlock, Barrhead, and area)
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or convention refugee legally able to work in Canada
  • Ready and willing to prepare for employment

Outreach services are delivered no less than once per month to the following communities:

  • Fox Creek
  • Swan Hills
  • Mayerthorpe
  • Lakeview Recovery Community

Transition to Employment Services (TES) offers eligible Albertans in Whitecourt, Barrhead, Westlock, and Athabasca tailored, no-cost support—including job matching, placement assistance, potential short-term training funds, and skills development—to help clients prepare for, secure, and maintain meaningful work.

Transition to Employment Services (TES) provides FREE, tailored support to help Albertans quickly prepare for and secure meaningful work. TES focuses on short-term, results-driven assistance to get you back to work as soon as possible.

Services Include:

  • One-on-one support from an experienced Career Advisor
  • Current labour market information
  • Job search assistance, resume writing, and interview preparation
  • Funding for short-term training and back-to-work resources
  • Help with transitioning smoothly into employment

Eligibility:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Live in the service area
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Receiving or eligible for Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Ready, willing, and able to work at least 30 hours per week
